For years, the DataDNA Dataset Challenge was the go-to monthly competition for data professionals, analysts, and enthusiasts looking to sharpen their skills, gain recognition, and connect with a global community of data practitioners. Hosted by Pomerol Partners in collaboration with industry partners including Qlik and others, the challenge created a unique ecosystem where learning and professional development converged. Now, as the challenge takes a pause, organizers are working to bring it back with new challenges and renewed energy.
The DataDNA Dataset Challenge was more than just a monthly competition—it was a structured learning and development initiative designed for data professionals at all levels. Each month, participants receive a curated dataset and are tasked with creating compelling visualizations, dashboards, and analyses that uncover meaningful insights. The challenge welcomes participants from around the world, working with any business intelligence or data visualization tool they choose.
Described as a “monthly learning and development appointment with yourself and hundreds of passionate data people,” the challenge brought together a global community committed to making information more accessible through effective data visualization and analysis.
Participants competed individually or as teams to create the most insightful visualizations or dashboards. The judging criteria emphasize both technical execution and analytical depth—how well participants visualize the data, define key performance indicators, uncover insights, and develop meaningful calculations and metrics.
Historically, winning entries received prizes including $400–$500 Amazon vouchers, DATAcated Circle memberships worth several hundred dollars, professional eBooks from sponsors like Packt and ColorWise, and special badges. The top five entries typically received recognition and prizes, creating multiple levels of achievement rather than a single winner-take-all format.
One unique aspect of the challenge was its social component. Participants were required to share their entries on LinkedIn with mentions to Pomerol Partners, sponsor companies, and the #dataDNA hashtag, creating visibility for their work and inviting connections to engage. This requirement transformed the challenge from a private competition into a networking opportunity.
Over its years of operation, the challenge featured an impressive variety of datasets that kept the competition fresh and engaging. Participants worked with everything from entertainment data like the Friends Series Dataset and Titanic records, to niche topics like Bigfoot sightings, Pokemon datasets, fitness tracker products, and billionaire rankings. More recent challenges focused on practical, real-world scenarios such as resume dashboards, supply chain analytics, and U.S. healthcare datasets.
This diversity served multiple purposes: it allowed participants to explore different analysis techniques, showcased real-world business use cases, and helped newer analysts build portfolio pieces across various industries.
The success of the DataDNA Dataset Challenge relied heavily on its community and supporting ecosystem. The challenge was designed to engage data enthusiasts, professionals, and students in real-world data analysis and visualization tasks, providing a platform to showcase skills in analytics and information design, build connections within the data science community, and solve practical problems using real datasets.
Guest judges—often prominent figures in the data and analytics space—brought credibility and diverse perspectives to the evaluation process. The DataDNA Ambassador team provided ongoing support and community engagement. Multiple sponsoring organizations including Packt, ZoomCharts, Astrato, and others contributed prizes and resources, demonstrating the value of the initiative across the entire data ecosystem.
Currently, the DataDNA Dataset Challenge is paused. However, this pause is a strategic step rather than a permanent closure. We’re using this time to reimagine the challenge and develop new competition formats that will better serve the evolving data community.
What can participants expect when the challenge returns? Based on current planning, the relaunched initiative will feature refreshed challenges that likely incorporate emerging trends in data analytics, such as AI-assisted analysis, newer datasets reflecting current business priorities, and possibly expanded tool support to include newer analytics platforms. The new format will maintain the collaborative spirit that made the original challenge successful while introducing elements that keep pace with technological advancement.
In a rapidly evolving field like data analytics, professionals need opportunities to learn new techniques, build portfolios, and stay current with industry best practices. The DataDNA Dataset Challenge provided structured, engaging, low-stakes practice environments—no one loses their job based on a challenge entry, but winners gain meaningful recognition and professional credentials that support career advancement.
For career changers and early-career analysts, the challenge offered portfolio-building opportunities without requiring access to proprietary company data. For experienced practitioners, it provided a way to explore new tools, experiment with novel visualization approaches, and stay connected with peers.
The DataDNA Dataset Challenge exemplified an important trend in professional development: community-led, peer-supported learning initiatives that operate outside traditional institutional structures. By bringing together analysts from different industries, geographies, and skill levels, the challenge created cross-pollination of ideas and techniques that pure formal training might not achieve.
When the challenge returns, it will rejoin a broader ecosystem of data-focused competitions and learning initiatives. However, its particular emphasis on visualization, insight discovery, and community engagement positions it as a unique space for professionals seeking both technical skill development and social connection.
For those who participated in previous challenges or are considering joining when it returns, the message is clear: the opportunity to learn, connect, and grow alongside hundreds of passionate data practitioners will be back. The data community will be ready.
